O

Most of Australia is wild, untamed land known as the outback. While many of the coastal regions of Australia are lush and fertile, much of the Australian interior is arid, rugged terrain. The harsh extremes of the outback loom large in the Australian imagination, and much of the nation’s great folklore centers on stories of squatters and bushrangers who survived the outback through their cunning and courage.

While it isn’t always visible, there is a great deal of wildlife in the outback. The heat of day can keep them hidden, but the outback plays host to a huge variety of reptiles, birds, wild camels and horses, and native wild dogs known as dingoes. Dingoes are golden or reddish–brown in color. They eat small animals and reptiles but also eat fruits and plants.

While many assume the outback is an enormous desert, its vast expanse also includes cities like Alice Springs and tropical waterfalls like those in Kakadu National Park. Located in the Northern Territories, Kakadu is popular with tourists for its ancient Aboriginal rock paintings, beautiful waterfalls and gorges, and frequent crocodile sightings.

We’re hitting the road with a jeep full of gear, bound for the rugged Australian frontier.

O is for outback where legends abound and wild and wonderful creatures are found.
